Report from Computing Executive Group
Reports from units.
The general consensus of the meeting was that the SL5.4 upgrade should take place as soon as possible, ideally in next week's release. Otherwise there would be time constraints with student projects and lab exams.
It will be possible to test the upgrade on "stable" machines from today's release by adding the <dice/options/test_updates.h> header. Conversely, machines can be held back by defining the DICE_STICK_WITH_SL53 macro.
There was some question about VMware. It was likely that host servers and possibly client machines would have to be held back.
Topics for discussion
The van is booked for Friday 12th to move kit out of FH-A12.
Clearing racks 0 and 1 is the priority, as we're tight for space in the Forum server room and need those two over there. However, moving things out of the other two racks would be a good thing in any case.
Services Unit don't expect to be able to move all their web servers tomorrow. They propose shifting the remaining ones on Friday 19th. As these are likely to be the last machines in rack 0, it's possible that the move could be coordinated with the techs, who will need a van to move the racks anyway. (Post-meeting note: that doesn't work for the techs.)
It would be useful to have a keyboard and screen in AT basement, and a label machine.
Alastair asked everyone to give some thought to the possibility of putting home directories on desktops, with a view to this being one of the discussion topics for the next meeting.
The next meeting should be on Wednesday 24th February in room 4.31.
