Report from Computing Executive Group
Reports from units.
COs to note the last paragraph. If the swap of the start-order of dns and routing hasn't fixed the updaterpms grumbles, please let the Inf unit know.
It was confirmed that if there was not an immediate need, no power bars would be bought.
There is a policy to follow when opening firewall holes. It was also noted that an annual review should be made of all self-managed machines to check that the requirement for firewall hole exceptions is still needed.
The devel bucket is now only available to those machines following the develop release. It is not a long term holding space and is just for short-term development.
Stephen pointed out that if you make any change to an rpm, it is essential to bump-up the release before submitting.
This is to be held on Friday 10th December. You need to sign up via MyEd. If you want any particular topic covered (e.g. Perl templating, validation of resources, Cmake), then contact Stephen as soon as possible.
MPU have checked the modules.dep file for the SL5 and F13 kernels and this seems to be the only module likely to cause us problems but please check if you think this might be an issue for other modules you need.
Graham to discuss the KDM problem with Alastair. It should be possible to restart kdm to kill existing sessions and start a new theme. Suggestion was to try the 'force restart' resource.
Alison is to circulate information on the tags required for machines in the AT server room to ensure that inventory information is picked up/updated and to check that JCMB tagging is in place. The question was also asked whether the inventory should include virtual machines.
Ensuring that the conference kiosk configuration is available under F13 needs to be added to the to-do list.
s17.pduhas lost its config - it probably ought to be replaced.
check_networkspam while nagios was off
Other points discussed were:
Perhaps nagios checks could be turned off in one go by using a macro. This would require a full build and would miss genuine problems at other sites?
It might be possible with the new HPs to change BIOS settings while the machine is up. We should compile a checklist/to-do list for all new machines (e.g. what BIOS settings need to be changed).
Console Server Issues
We possibly saw some console server issues while machines were being brought up. After some discussion, it was tentatively agreed that most issues could be explained e.g. no activity/response while machines were fsck'ing.
Many of the DNS changesd were left to the Saturday morning. It was agreed that they should preferably be done the evening before giving ample time for changes to be made and no risk of the changes not happening in time!
In summary, it was agreed that f13 devel packages should not only be on devel machines. However, they should be separated out into another list and therefore be an optional extra.
It was agreed that this would be a good idea and MPU/RAT are to investigate.
Christmas lunch will be on Thursday 16th December. Venue still to be decided.
The next Operational meeting will be on Wednesday 24th November in room 4.31.
