Just a reminder that we should continue to report issues to Alastair.
Alison has emailed support with suggested procedure for checking lab machines. Stephen/Chris to look into extracting information from client reports.
Ongoing - but suggestion is to get them out of the racks as soon as possible and stack against the wall until we can arrange for them to be moved. Reminder that Units should inform Alastair of such machines so that he can decide whether suitable to reallocate.
Craig to chase Angus.
Toby has circulated. Comments to be passed to Toby.
Alison circulated IS response. Alastair to raise at CCPAG.

Report from Computing Executive Group
Alastair explained the reasoning behind investigating the possibility of implementing a VM solution to get round the problem of it not being possible to host one exam sitting in our AT labs. The VM would be implemented in both IS and AT labs to ensure a standard environment for the exam. The VM would not require frequent updates, would be cut-down, DICE-authenticated and usable by students on their home machines or in the IS public labs at other times. Issues that need further investigation include firewall setup, backups during the exam and how students would submit their exam work. IS are looking into how the VM would be deployed and should respond shortly.
Reports from units
Note the comment regarding NOT using the 'downtime' state for long periods. The suggested working practice is to disable nagios completely by adding "#define DICE_NO_NAGIOS" at the top of the profile.
Please let Stephen know of any dates next week that are not suitable for the proposed move from tobermory to schiff.
A reminder that office desktops will be set to upgrade to SL6.3 after stable release of 24th Oct. There will be the usual 5 day reboot window.
Please set the sysinfo.criticality resource of any critical VM to 'high'. This will help MPU greatly when needing to work on a physical host.
Please add exam dates to your diary! Note that we have 2 exams running concurrently for the first time. The changes to allow this to happen have been tested but we will run our own mock exam beside one of the mocks in November as further testing.
Topics for discussion
The majority concensus was that Vittoria's is as good a venue as any. Stephen agreed to send out a doodle poll shortly. This year it's likely to be an evening session.
All servers identified in the past as 'spares' should be identified and suitably labelled physically and by adding comments to the profile. All 1850's should be removed and junked. Any spare server should be connected but powered-off, ready to go. In the case of a disaster/pandemic a decision will be made by CEG as to the priority in which services are to be restored and hence how any 'spare' machines, including space on kvms, should be allocated.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 14th November at 10:00 in IF-4.31.
