This was discussed at some length. Ian asked for clarification on what responsibilities were being accepted by anybody who opted in to any such notifications and what actions should be taken on receipt of any such notifications? This of course raises in turn the question in turn of whether receiving these notifications should be optional or if it is something that is expected of all computing staff.
It's also clear that we need to decide exactly what it is we wish to monitor and how these notifications should be made. In particular, it was suggested that something more attention grabbing than email was required for out of hours. Craig will take these issues back to CEG for further clarification in the first instance. It was suggested that it might be worthwhile investigating what other Schools, colleges, and indeed Universities monitor and how they handle notifications of any problems.
We need to have shed 20% of our current combined server load by Thursday 20th June. Alastair is meeting with HOS on 13th June to discuss the approach to take to implement this. Once this has been decided, it will be clearer what action can, and should, be taken. In the meantime, all Units should consider what they can do to reduce the load.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 26th June 2019 in IF-4.31 at 10:00.
