GPFS FAQ

What is GPFS?

GPFS is IBM's HPC parallel filesystm product, it provides a high performance networked filesystem by spreading files across disks on multiple nodes.

References: wikipedia IBM Usenix

Where is it installed in the School?

GPFS is designed to support HPC so it's installed on the school beowulf cluster and is accessible on the head and compute nodes.

Can I have the filesystem on my desktop?

No, GPFS requires a security configuration that isn't compatible with desktop machines. It's also not clear what effects running GPFS across the whole of our network topology would have on network performance.

Can I have it installed on (my|a) server?

Possibly, it largely depends on where the server is both physically and on the network. We would be interested to hear from anyone wanting to try this, please submit an RT ticket.

How do I access it?

It should be mounted as /gpfs on all the nodes. There is a scratch directory that is writable by anyone.

Is the filesystem backed up?

No, this is replacing a scratch NFS partition for the beowulf. If there is sufficient demand we may expand the service.

How much space can I have?

The filesystem is set up as scratch space, take what you can get but be nice and clear it once you are finished with it.

ECDF/Eddie uses GPFS can I access those?

Not at the moment, but possibly in the future.
